I had another article published in My Business magazine recently. You can read a PDF version here: Seven Sins of Website Design.

    Welcome back Sophie :)

The ‘about us’ page is interesting in that I’m not sure if they play as big a role as they used to, I guess it depends if it is a mum and dad type a scenario versus a large corperate entitiy and on the users themselves.
For example kids these days would not give a crap about a family owned business if it got them their ringtone or funny background etc where as older people might definately look for a more human/personable/trustworthy kind of connection to a website.
As for splash pages I could not agree more, we have had a situation where we could not talk a client out of a splash landing page and even after it went live they still loved it! guess it’s all in the eye of the beholder :)
Ok enough drunken rambling time to get back to work.

Thanks for your comments Michael. You’re right about the type of site having a bearing on whether certain pages are relevant. The article was for a business magazine so I felt more relevant. Now get back to work. ;)
